Lodge Information:

The roots of Freemasonry in India trace back to the mid-18th century with European Traders and Military Personnel, primarily involving Dutch and French Lodges, with Pune's involvement emerging later due to Maratha resistance until 1818. The Irish Masonic presence in Pune began in 1812 with the Irish Military Lodge Minden No. 63 I.C., linked to the 20th Foot Lancaster Fusiliers, which ventured near Pune before leaving India in 1829, its members having participated in the Anglo-Maratha Wars. In 1994, Lodge Hely-Hutchinson No. 465 I.C. marked the return of an Irish Lodge to Pune, named after the Hely-Hutchinson family, notably Richard Hely-Hutchinson, the 1st Earl of Donoughmore. The Lodge was originally Warranted in Calcutta in 1919 and saw various transformations, before a brief sojourn in Kulti, or Coultee, near Asansol in West Bengal, its going in abeyance in the 1960s and revival in 1975. After periods in Calcutta, Kulti, and Bombay, it relocated to Pune in 1993, where it continues to thrive, celebrating its centenary and symbolizing resilience and continuity in Irish Freemasonry. It is one of the memories of pre-Independence Irish Masonic glory in undivided Bengal when Calcutta was the Imperial Capital.
